佐賀平野で、冬に天山から吹き下ろす季節風は「天山おろし」と呼ばれています。 冬には北麓に人工雪設備を備えたスキー場（天山スキー場）が開設されたほか、山頂あたりに積もる雪を市内からも確認できます。
